The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking to join a federal lawsuit accusing the Los Angeles school district of discriminating against white students. At issue is a long-running effort to help disadvantaged students of color in Los Angeles by providing somewhat smaller classes to the vast majority of schools - leaving out campuses with larger numbers of white students. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in January by the 1776 Project Foundation, targets a decades-old effort to combat the harms of segregation
"The current salary schedule is so low that thousands of LAUSD educators qualify as low-income for affordable housing," the union said in a recent statement. Thousands of teachers more "are barely getting by just above the median income, living paycheck to paycheck after decades working for the district," the union statement said.
Since then, school policies have softened significantly. At L.A. Unified, for example, parents are directed to send their children to school if they have a mild cold or cough. The main symptoms that require keeping a child home are fever of 100.4 and above, vomiting or diarrhea, according to district instructions on "How to Safely Send Your Student to School."
