Parts of the UK have been placed under an amber health alert as Brits prepare to ring in the 2026 New Year's celebrations amid frosty conditions. Snow may be in store for some parts of the country, with temperatures dipping to -4 degrees, and there are even reports that the first week of January may see a sprinkling of snow in London. But what about New Year's Eve?
Londoners might not have got a white Christmas, but it looks as though 2026 could kick off with a blast of snow for parts of the UK. And that includes the capital. Snow is notoriously hard to predict, but some early forecasts for this weekend (January 3-4) are saying that temperatures in the capital city could fall below freezing, accompanied by a flurry of the white stuff. So, prepare to wrap up, slip on your wellies and (maybe) dust off that toboggan.
The forecaster has warned that an icy northerly wind means temperatures in some parts of the country could drop to -10C as the first cold snap of the season takes hold. In London, temperatures will remain at around 5C through the day until Friday, with colder conditions at night. The capital felt significantly colder throughout Monday despite sunny spells throughout the day.
We've got one more bank holiday to enjoy this weekend (August 23-25). This is your chance to soak up the last of the London summer before the nights get longer and the sunshine feels like a distant memory. Luckily, the forecast for this weekend is pretty nice - ahead of next week, when the tail end of Hurricane Erin could bring wind, rain, and general wintry things to Britain.
