Born and raised in Texas, Dr Crowder left the state to attend Howard University. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1982 and her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1986 from Howard University College of Medicine. She returned to Texas to begin practising and later became board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1994.

"If you or someone you love is going to give birth in a hospital, there is a question you need to ask before you go that can determine whether you are likely to have safe care or not," said labor and delivery nurse Jen Hamilton. "You need to know whether the hospital you are going to give birth in follows AWHONN's safe staffing standards," she continued.
