The MTA took its first plunge into the summer season on Thursday afternoon with the launch of its express Long Island Rail Road Hamptons service ahead of Memorial Day Weekend. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and LIRR President Rob Free announced the return of the agency's Cannonball service ahead of the first such train of the season departing New York Penn Station at 4:07 p.m. on May 21. The service resumed just in time for the unofficial start of summer, and days after the MTA and five unions representing about half of the LIRR workforce resolved a three-day strike late Monday night.
Seasonal programming is ramping up as Memorial Day Weekend arrives and the city's public beaches open for swimming with lifeguards on duty. Various neighborhoods are also hosting events and parades for the holiday, to honor the millions of Americans who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. That means roads around the city will be closed as marching bands and American flags make their way down them.
Lift operations are limited to Victor Glacier for all three days, with the 9am to 1pm window applying Saturday through Monday. The resort is reminding guests to ski and ride responsibly and to be aware of other guests on the mountain, particularly families and less experienced skiers who may be navigating spring conditions for the first time.
