There would be considerable historical irony if the court decides to use the 14th Amendment to provide the legal cover for reversing a generation of Black political progress in the South. A Missouri judge known for dressing up as Elvis Presley in the courtroom has been removed from office by the Missouri Supreme Court, ending a nearly two-decade judicial career amid concerns that his behavior undermined the integrity of the judiciary. The decision last month by the state's highest court was a rejection of a previously negotiated disciplinary agreement. The state supreme court ordered Judge Matthew E.P. Thornhill, a St. Charles County, Missouri, judge, off the bench effective immediately, Legal Newsline reports.

A federal judge granted a preliminary injunction Monday, Feb. 9, allowing federal immigration officials to continue wearing masks during California operations, but upheld a law requiring law enforcement to display badges identifying themselves and their agency. U.S. District Judge Christine A. Snyder in Los Angeles granted the Trump administration's request for a temporary order halting enforcement of SB 627, the No Secret Police Act, which Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law in September amid ongoing waves of federal immigration enforcements across California.

Catch me up: Halligan departed nearly two months after U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie ruled her appointment unconstitutional and after judges publicly questioned her authority in blistering orders. The ruling torpedoed indictments against ex-FBI director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. While the government appealed the ruling, it never sought a stay. Yet Halligan kept using the title, and judges repeatedly struck "United States Attorney" from her filings and questioned her authority.
