Marsden's introduction is very lucid, setting out the development of sculpture at court; royal involvement with sculptors; displaying sculpture in galleries, state rooms, libraries and gardens; and stewardship of the collection.
Set on the blossom tree-lined fringes of Hyde Park in London, Herbert Wilcox's black-and-white rom-com blows in like a fresh spring breeze. The film charts the will-they-won't-they romance between Richard (Michael Wilding), a wealthy lord masquerading as a butler, and Judy (Anna Neagle), the niece of the family who employs him.
In Siegfried, the third part of Der Ring des Nibelungen, Richard Wagner shifts the focus away from the troubled world of the gods towards the energy of youth on earth. This is storytelling through opera, where the theatre is crucial and the music sublime.
I would almost liken the pieces we included to trophies. You could take these examples as pinnacles of human civilization. So much so that Yorgos wasn't keen on us even having reproductions. Michelle, then, seems to have collected these items as a kind of physical highlight reel of human creativity—and therefore, as subtle self-validation of her humanity.
Lorena Bradford started monthly tours in American Sign Language, established a program for individuals with memory loss, and brought in medical students to learn soft skills to apply in their caregiving. 'I was a sub-department of one,' she joked to writer Emma Cieslik, who spoke with Bradford over Zoom and at the NGA about her own circuitous path into the profession, and the future of the field of museum accessibility.
ABODI Transylvania is a wearable art fashion house and living mythology created by Transylvanian-born designer Dora Abodi, rooted in Eastern European and Balkan folklore, gothic horror, and her own Szekler noble heritage. Enrigue's 'penchant for shooting the facts of history through the prism of the absurd' makes him singular-but it also puts him firmly in a long literary tradition. The book 'distills a byzantine swirl of historical events through the lives of a handful of very colorful characters,' intertwining several real and invented incidents with major moments in the Apache Wars, a series of skirmishes involving Native Americans, the U.S., and Mexico across the Southwest borderlands.
Bridgerton Candlelight Evenings at Edge will take place from 8pm to 9pm for just five nights (February 28, March 1, March 6, March 7 and March 13). Expect standing-room-only indoor pop-up performances featuring classical takes on the show's swoony pop covers, all set against 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline from 100 stories up.
There was so much to do, and it really pushed the team right to the very limits. The new backlot at Shepperton had to be intricately designed and constructed to transport actors back in time to Georgian-era England with horse-drawn carriages trotting down worn cobblestone roads. Then we also had to design the Queen's World set of rooms, which was an absolutely enormous undertaking.
It's nice that you are asking about props, because they're not really acknowledged, says Jode Mann, a TV prop master in Los Angeles. When Mann worked on the children's comedy show Pee-wee's Playhouse in the 1980s, she got a call from its star, Paul Reubens, who said he was nominating her for an Emmy. It was only after Mann told her mother and promised to thank her if she won that Reubens called back to say he couldn't nominate her because there's no category for you.
I wrote and directed the Mel Gibson film Payback but got fired during post-production. It was my first film as director and I thought my career was over. It was during this downtime that I wrote A Knight's Tale. I loved the idea that jousting tournaments were medieval sports, but I had never figured out what to do with it.
Some things are out of our control. But what is in our control, is our ability to support one another. And ensure that we do not allow fear to keep us from experiencing something that could be truly special.
With more than 100 cinemas, London is a wonderland for cinephiles . Pull back the curtain of some the most beloved picture houses and you'll find fascinating histories galore. The Regent Street Cinema is one of those places. This month it celebrates 130 years since it became the birthplace of British cinema with screenings of the Lumière brothers' groundbreaking Cinématographe show in 1896. It changed entertainment forever.
The important thing about adaptations isn't what's taken out but what's put in. Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights"-or, as she'd have it, " 'Wuthering Heights,' " complete with scare quotes-is the season's second Frankenstein movie, because Fennell takes bits and pieces from Emily Brontë's novel and, adding much of her own imagining, reassembles them into a misbegotten thing that wants only to be loved. And paying audiences seem to love it, even if many critics don't.
