One 10-year-old kid tells Smith he likes 'punk rock,' and goes on to name his favorite 'punk' bands as 'blink-182, Green Day [and] Red Hot Chili Peppers,' not even realizing he was standing right next to the Chili Peppers drummer. Smith laughs as he responds, 'Red Hot Chili Peppers, they're not really punk rock, but okay!'
At its heart, this is a deeply relatable story-about the friendships that shape our identities and the lasting power of the bonds forged in adolescence. What's less relatable, of course, is that here those friends went on to create one of the greatest rock bands in history.
In addition to Parker on guitar and Refosco handling percussion, "A Plea" also features double bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Deantoni Parks, alto flutist Rickey Washington, trombonist Vikram Devasthali, and Flea on electric bass in addition to trumpet. Additional vocals are provided by Chris Warren and the song's producer Josh Johnson, who plays alto saxophone, too.
