[Marshon] Lattimore was given the benefit of the doubt for his subpar play in 2024 because of a hamstring injury that limited him to five games, including the playoffs, after the Commanders acquired him. He never regained the form that led to four Pro Bowl berths with the Saints before tearing the ACL in his left knee nine games into the season.
The Diamondbacks announced they've signed reliever Taylor Clarke to a one-year contract. They designated right-hander Gus Varland for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster. The club did not announce salary terms for Clarke, who is represented by the Ballengee Group. Clarke should be a familiar name to Arizona fans. The Snakes selected him out of the College of Charleston as a third-round pick in 2015. He debuted in a swing role four years later and spent parts of three seasons with the MLB club.
With Kazuma Okamoto joining the Blue Jays, the club had to make room on their 40-man roster to add him. That move resulted in right-handed pitcher Paxton Schultz being designated for assignment earlier this week and it didn't take long for the 28-year-old to find a new home. The Nationals have picked up Schultz, according to the team's official twitter account. They had room on their roster after releasing right-handed pitcher Sauryn Lao on Friday morning.
The Rangers announced that Anthony Veneziano has been released from his minor league contract so that the southpaw can pursue an opportunity with an Asian team. Veneziano only just signed with Texas about four weeks ago, though as per the norm with non-roster players, the Rangers aren't going to stand in the way if Veneziano is given a guaranteed offer from a foreign club.
The Pirates are designating reliever Chase Shugart for assignment, reports Jason Mackey of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They needed to create a 40-man roster spot for Ryan O'Hearn, whose two-year free agent contract was finalized this afternoon. Pittsburgh acquired Shugart in a minor trade with the Red Sox last offseason. The Texas product had only six games of MLB experience at the time. He made it into 35 contests in his first and potentially only season as a Pirate.
Bruihl joined the Blue Jays as a minor league free agent in March. He put together 42 solid innings at Triple-A, earning a promotion to the big-league club. The 28-year-old lefty made 15 appearances with Toronto, recording a 5.27 ERA over 13 2/3 innings. Bruihl punched out 27.7% of the hitters he faced, though it came with a 10.8% walk rate.
Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is returning to the Atlanta Braves, agreeing Monday to a $20 million, one-year contract. Kim gets a $4 million raise. He had declined a $16 million player option from the $29 million, two-year contract he agreed to in February with Tampa Bay, a deal that paid him $13 million. The Braves announced the new deal with Kim on Monday night.
This time, the club agreed to a three-year, $45M contract with closer Robert Suarez. He will make $13M in 2026 and $16M in each of his remaining years. Previously with the San Diego Padres, 34-year-old Suarez put together what was arguably the best season of his career. In 2025, he managed a 2.97 ERA through 69.2 frames. He turned in 40 saves in 45 chances and recorded 9.69 strikeouts per nine innings. He's got 77 career saves to accompany his 219 strikeouts.
On Sunday, when the Giants reclaimed the lead in Denver with 37 seconds remaining, the second-year kicker missed an extra point wide right to make it a two-point game. Denver then moved down the field and kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired. "Gotta make the kicks," McAtamney said afterwards. "Not gonna shy away from that. I'll take full responsibility."
Now he'll be looking for a new home. We still don't know what happened here, and I'm not going to speculate. Raheem Morris alluded to football-related issues rather than disciplinary ones, but we don't have any concrete information on what went on between McCloud and the team that had him parked and now released. I just hope, above all, that McCloud is okay.
The Falcons will soon be adding some depth to their secondary. According to Josh Kendall of The Athletic, the team designated for return from injured reserve today. Fuller suffered a knee injury in Week 1 that landed him on injured reserve. The veteran only required a minimum four-game stay on IR before returning to practice. The team now has 21 days to activate Fuller to the active roster.
The Colts have signed free-agent linebacker Germaine Pratt two days after the veteran was surprisingly released by the Las Vegas Raiders. Pratt signed a one-year contract with the Raiders during the offseason and was just four games in when he was left inactive in last Sunday's loss to the Colts while not traveling with the club to Indianapolis.
"We're looking at a guy that pretty much established himself in the everyday lineup -- whether it was at third base, second base," Baty said. "And then what he was able to provide for us offensively, defensively. It's a big blow. But we got other guys that are going to get opportunities and they're going to have to step up."
It's an abrupt end to Manoah's time in Toronto. The Jays selected the big right-hander with the 11th overall pick in the 2019 draft. The West Virginia product reached the big leagues two seasons later. He fired 20 starts with a 3.22 earned run average to finish eighth in AL Rookie of the Year balloting in 2021. Manoah built off that promising debut with a fantastic first full season in the big leagues.
On Monday, Ryans was asked about the communication between his secondary's players, admitting "it hasn't not been great." "When you see a big play that happens on our defense, somewhere along the lines, there's a bust in communication," Ryans said. "It all starts with communication and it hasn't been as crisp as it needs to be. We see that. We have to make some adjustments there to make sure we get it corrected."
Ragans, 28 this offseason, has been out more than three months due to a strained rotator cuff in his left shoulder. His absence has been a major reason for Kansas City's slide in the standings and the team's all but certain elimination from playoff contention, although Ragans certainly hasn't been the only rotation member to run into health woes this year.
His numbers on the season look good until you check under the hood. He has thrown 29 innings with a 2.48 earned run average. However, his 17.5% strikeout rate and 12.5% walk rate are both subpar figures. His 51.3% ground ball rate is pretty good but he has largely benefitted from a .197 batting average on balls in play and 89.5% strand rate.
The Angels selected catcher Sebastian Rivero onto the big league roster, notes Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register. Rivero is starting tonight and hitting eighth against Twins righty Simeon Woods Richardson. Logan O'Hoppe heads to the seven-day concussion injured list after being hit on a backswing by A's infielder Jacob Wilson yesterday. Rivero was not on the 40-man roster, so the Halos will need to announce another move before game time. More to come.
The Valkyries have activated forward Cecilia Zandalasini from injury and have waived center Elizabeth Kitley, the team announced on Monday. Zandalasini has missed the last eight games with a left calf injury she suffered just minutes before the Valkyries' game against the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 19. Zandalasini is questionable to play in tomorrow's game against the Seattle Storm. According to a release from the team, Zandalasini will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.
The Yankees are adding another veteran bat to the mix ahead of their crucial weekend set with the Blue Jays. Austin Slater has officially been reinstated from the injured list. Slater has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring strain on August 4 against the Texas Rangers. His initial timeline called for a 4-to-6 week recovery. The 32-year-old was able to work his way into five minor league rehab games over the past week, and now he's officially been deemed ready to make his return.
The Brewers sent infielder Oliver Dunn outright to Triple-A Nashville, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Dunn cleared waivers after being designated for assignment when Jackson Chourio returned from the injured list over the weekend. This is his first outright and he doesn't have three years of big league service, so he'll need to accept the assignment. Dunn has been with Nashville since the middle of April.
A year ago, the New York Jets wanted Malachi Corley so much that they traded up and selected him with the first pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft. On Tuesday, they cut him, a source confirmed to ESPN. Corley, buried near the bottom of the depth chart throughout training camp, becomes the highest-drafted player from 2024 to be released, according to ESPN Research. The regime that picked Corley was fired last season, which certainly didn't help his chances.
