Uphill travel restrictions are enforced for safety, and ignoring warnings can lead to law enforcement summonses at ski resorts.
Of the 13 total deaths that occurred in-bounds at Colorado ski resorts, 9 of them were trauma-related, according to a Colorado Sun report by Jason Blevins. All 9 trauma-related deaths came from collisions with trees or falls; none came from collisions with other skiers. All were wearing helmets at the time of each accident.
Cal/OSHA's report issued three specific violations, determining that Mammoth Mountain: Placed personnel in unnecessary danger without providing adequate safeguards. Failed to establish effective "safe zones" for patrollers to shelter in while avalanche mitigation (intentional triggering of slides) was underway. Lacked proper documentation regarding avalanche training for its employees.
This at first glance look like one of the social media influencer dance troops that film in public places with total disregard for inconvenience created for pedestrians just trying to get on with their day but it was actually an organized music video shoot to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The snowboarders were likely told to carve around the dancers and perhaps throw up a little spray to liven things up but an unrehearsed blind side collision ended up knocking them down like bowling pins.
