When Toronto's streetcars hit a rare open stretch of road, the metallic grind gives way to an airy electric hum, and for a fleeting moment, there is a feeling that one is hurtling along the knife's edge of the future. Seconds later, the illusion shatters: the car grinds to a halt, at a stop or more often, in traffic.

Fares will be free for the Finch West LRT for its official opening this weekend, Toronto's mayor told reporters as she and other officials toured the new Line 6 Friday. The 10.3-kilometre light-rail transit line, which has 18 stops along Finch Avenue W. between Humber College's north campus and Finch West station, is finally opening Sunday after four years of delays.

The first race in the series, which Bauer calls 'Man Versus Machine,' saw him take on the 509 Harbourfront, which runs from Exhibition Loop on the city's waterfront, to Union Station downtown, a journey of roughly 3.1 kilometres.
