Intercity bus transport in Europe is characterized by a fragmented operator landscape, including a high number of small and medium-sized companies, alongside less standardized operational patterns and frequent dual-use vehicle profiles.
Ken Podziba, Bike New York's president and CEO, emphasized that the Five Boro Bike Tour is not a race, but an opportunity to see New York City on two wheels. He stated, 'You ride across the five bridges, and you see the skyline in front of you. You're experiencing it at street level.'
The delivery follows an initial batch of 10 buses introduced in August 2025, bringing the total number of vehicles supplied under the programme to 100. The buses have been integrated into the NTC fleet, which has historically operated an ageing vehicle base.

The traffic light system that prioritises buses contains sensors, so they know when buses are approaching. They can stay green for longer when a bus is approaching, or switch from red to green more quickly if a bus is waiting. "These lights should also allow cyclists to pass through without waiting," Stevenson said.
