Fueled by an upswing in the South Bay, the Bay Area gained thousands of jobs in December 2025. California as a whole, however, suffered losses in a setback that capped a dreary economic year for the nation's largest state. The region added 2,300 nonfarm payroll jobs last month, according to a report released by the state Employment Development Department on Friday. Overall, the state lost 1,700.

Employers across the U.S. announced 62,075 job cuts in July, a 29% increase from June and a 140% surge over July 2024, ending the typical midsummer lull.

Florida's unemployment rate remained at 3.7% in June, with private-sector jobs down 21,000 from May, indicating a shrinking workforce of 11.193 million.

In June, the Bay Area experienced a net loss of 6,800 jobs, contributing to continued employment declines over the last two months in the region.

Most economists anticipate the brunt of the impact from punishing levies will be seen in coming months.
