He was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and an automatic ejection. It marked the first time Payne, in his eighth season, has been ejected from a game.

During the Cowboys' game against the New York Jets, multiple fans recorded Jones appearing to interact with opposing fans from the owner's suite. In the middle of this interaction, Jones held up his middle finger before pointing at someone and waving to someone else.
