My friend Elaine Short, who has died aged 89, was an artist, potter, teacher and Francophile. She was also a skilled and talented weaver. When I met her in the 1990s she showed me some of her beautiful tapestries, many of them inspired by the Sussex countryside. Her work was exhibited in galleries including Hastings Art Forum, where she was an active member, and her tapestry techniques were much admired.

When considering Miguel Arzabe 's bold, woven works, it's unsurprising that he begins by painting two abstract pieces. Vibrant fields of acrylic spread across his canvases before they're sliced into long strips and reconfigured. Resulting are dynamic compositions that meld art historical traditions with Arzabe's Bolivian heritage, drawing on longstanding Andean imagery and weaving practices.

Rising sea levels and increased storm intensity are exacerbating stressors that create conditions unsustainable for the healthy growth of pandanus, a vital resource for weaving.
