A meta-analysis indicated that probiotics as an adjunct to traditional antipsychotic treatment significantly reduce schizophrenia symptoms. The systematic review included five double-blind, placebo-controlled trials with 281 participants, assessing psychotic symptoms using the PANSS. The results revealed substantial heterogeneity, leading researchers to apply a random-effects model. The findings suggest that probiotics are beneficial, but the small sample sizes and variation in probiotic formulations limit the generalizability. Further research is essential to deepen understandings of these results, as more robust evidence is needed to solidify findings in clinical practice.
This is the first meta-analysis to report positive outcomes regarding the effects of probiotic supplementation on clinical symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.
However, to achieve more robust conclusions, further research is needed due to the limitations of small sample sizes and heterogeneity among studies.
