Gartner advises caution for enterprises considering investments in agentic AI tools due to a high cancellation rate of projects. Rising costs, low ROI, and immature use cases contribute to challenges in the field. A significant portion of current agentic AI applications are mislabeled as such, often being repackaged chatbots rather than true agents. This disconnect, coupled with early-stage experimental projects driven by hype, underlines the need for strategic decision-making among organizations to avoid pitfalls in deploying AI at scale.
"Most agentic AI projects right now are early stage experiments or proof of concepts that are mostly driven by hype and are often misapplied," said Anushree Verma, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner.
"This can blind organizations to the real cost and complexity of deploying AI agents at scale, stalling projects from moving into production."
"Many use cases positioned as agentic today don't require agentic implementations."
