"Waymo has said it will deny government requests for the footage its vehicles capture if those requests are "overly broad and unlawful." But its robotaxis have nevertheless drawn criticism for being part of a growing surveillance state. That frustration has contributed to the company's vehicles becoming a target of multiple instances of vandalism. Waymo SUVs have been burned, smashed, and had their tires slashed in different cities over the last few years."
The GTA Online expansion introduces KnoWay robotaxis that behave destructively, swerving, wrecking cars, and crashing through a company billboard. The KnoWay vans are adorned with lidar sensors and visually resemble earlier-generation Chrysler Pacifica autonomous vehicles. The expansion, titled "A Safehouse in the Hills," arrived December 10 with a storyline that teases an AI assistant named Haviland and encourages players to stop development of a mass surveillance network. The in-game robotaxis may be hijacked by players or portrayed as having gone rogue. Real-world Waymo has said it will deny overly broad government footage requests, yet its vehicles have faced vandalism including burnings, smashing, and slashed tires.
