San Jose Airport beats out SFO for travel bragging right
"As Waymo continues to expand service across the Bay Area, the autonomous automobile company received its first authorization to operate at a major international airport in California - and it's not San Francisco International Airport. Waymo expanded into San Jose earlier this year, and on Thursday, San Jose Mineta International Airport announced in a news release that travelers can ride a Waymo to and from the airport "later this year" after the company finishes its rollout."
"Airport-bound travelers can eventually ride in an autonomous vehicle from anywhere in the designated service area in San Francisco or in the South Bay, as well as order a ride at SJC for pickup at one of the airport's two Ground Transportation Centers, in either Terminal A or Terminal B. Earlier this year, Waymo won a 30-day permit to begin mapping roadways at SFO, but commercial service is not available there."
Waymo obtained authorization to operate at San Jose Mineta International Airport, allowing travelers to ride Waymo vehicles to and from the airport later this year after rollout completion. The permission makes SJC the first commercial airport in California to permit Waymo rides, ahead of Los Angeles International and San Francisco International. Airport pickups will be available at SJC's two Ground Transportation Centers in Terminals A and B, and riders can originate from the designated San Francisco and South Bay service areas. Waymo previously received a 30-day permit to map SFO roadways but has no commercial service there. Waymo began airport operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor in 2022.
