Recently, over 1,300 Google employees petitioned for improved policies regarding layoffs, including guaranteed severance and changes to the performance review system linked to job security. The Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) organized this effort, highlighting fears around job stability within a financially prosperous company. Google responded by announcing a voluntary exit program for select employees. However, the AWU continues to advocate for more concrete policies to secure employees' rights and protections in the face of ongoing uncertainties in the tech industry.
Ongoing rounds of layoffs make us feel insecure about our jobs. The company is clearly in a strong financial position, making the loss of so many valuable colleagues without explanation hurt even more.
We are happy to see material progress in response to our concerns, but we continue to demand that Google commit to practices like offers of voluntary buyouts and fair terms of severance.
