Abdel Basset al-Sarout, once a national youth soccer goalkeeper, became a prominent figure in Syria's revolution against the Assad regime with his empowering songs. Although he was killed in 2019, his music, once suppressed, is now celebrated openly. Ayman al-Masri, the lyricist behind many of al-Sarout's songs, emerged as a significant yet lesser-known figure. Before the revolution, al-Masri sold car parts and had a cake factory, but he became an activist writing lyrics that resonated deeply within the revolutionary spirit. Their collaboration marked a pivotal cultural moment in the uprising.
"Al-Sarout had a rare charisma and kindness... He understood me, and I him - sometimes just from a look in our eyes."
"Before the revolution began, Masri sold car parts and owned a cake factory. When anti-regime protests began in 2011, he threw himself into organizing demonstrations."
