silvio d'ascia carves gallery extension beneath stone walls of fondation maeght in france
Briefly

The Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence celebrates its 60th anniversary with the first major architectural update since its 1964 inception. To address spatial constraints limiting exhibitions, Silvio d'Ascia Architecture designed 'invisible' extensions for 580 additional square meters. These extensions blend seamlessly into the existing structure, with two new exhibition halls added below the foundation, prioritizing continuity. The adaptive spaces allow for varied artistic displays and performances, reinforcing the foundation's status as a cultural landmark without compromising its original architectural identity.
"The resulting volumes extend rather than alter, subtly refining the existing architectural narrative rather than introducing a competing one."
"The larger of the two is a 390-square-meter hall that lies beneath the Giacometti Courtyard, creating an unbroken, column-free space adaptable for exhibitions, performances, and screenings."
