Erice van Leuven, the 2024 Junior World Champion, experienced a severe crash during a practice run at the Hardline Tasmania downhill series. Posting from her hospital bed, she shared details of her injuries, including a broken back, neck, and wrist, as well as internal injuries like a collapsed lung. Despite the seriousness of her condition, van Leuven expressed gratitude for her survivability. Her team initially reported she was in good spirits, unaware of her severe injuries. She had previously established herself as a top downhill competitor, winning numerous titles and races.
I had the biggest crash of my life yesterday, and am very lucky to be walking. I've broken my back, neck and wrist along with some small internal injuries.
Before the extent of van Leuven's injuries were fully known her team, Norco Race Division, posted that she had crashed on the course and would not drop for her last run, but that 'she's okay and in good spirits.'
