Safety First on Third: DOT Numbers Show a Roadway Safer for All Users - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

The addition of a protected bike lane on Third Avenue in Manhattan has led to significant reductions in overall injuries, with a 33% drop in total injuries and a 43% decrease for drivers and car occupants in the past year. The new bike lane accommodated a 79% increase in bike traffic while cyclist injuries only rose by 10%. Pedestrian injuries decreased by 63%, and critical infrastructure changes helped eliminate fatalities on that segment. The city's innovative 'green wave' light timing also promotes safety during the day and night.
During the same period, pedestrian injuries dropped 63 percent. The bike lane, and other street safety improvements, were completed in late 2023.
The 15-mile-per-hour light timing continues overnight, preventing drivers from reaching the kind of high speeds that carry with them an even greater risk of injury.
"This Green Wave ... reduce[s] red-light running among cyclists and overnight speeding among drivers," Barone added.
"DOT's redesign of Third Avenue has significantly reduced serious injuries - whether you're walking, biking, or in a car on the corridor," spokesman Vin Barone said.
