Jack Throne, co-writer of 'Adolescence', has denied a conspiracy theory alleging the show is based on real-life crimes committed by Black children, labeling it as absurd. Throne clarified the show’s inspiration comes from a pattern of violent crimes in the U.K., emphasizing that it does not draw from specific events or promote racial narratives. Instead, the series explores themes of masculinity and the societal factors contributing to youth violence, as echoed by creator and actor Stephen Graham, who was influenced by shocking real-life incidents of violence involving young boys.
Throne stated, "There is no part of this that's based on a true story, not one single part," stressing the show's inspiration comes from a pattern of U.K. crimes.
In response to the conspiracy theory, Throne remarked, "It's absurd to say that [knife crime] is only committed by Black boys. It's absurd. It's not true."
Graham shared his shock at real-life incidents, saying, "I was thinking, 'What's going on? What's happening in society where a boy stabs a girl to death?'"
He explained his intent: "I really just wanted to shine a light on the societal issues leading to such tragic acts of violence, rather than singular events."
