Lester was initially charged with serious offenses but opted for a plea deal before his trial. His sudden death has left questions regarding justice for Yarl, who survived the incident. Yarl's family expressed grief over the prolonged legal fight and the perceived lack of accountability for acts of racial violence, underscoring ongoing racial tensions and gun policies in the United States.
While legal proceedings have concluded, we acknowledge that Mr. Lester took responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty in this case.
What happened was one of the reasons our family pushed for a speedy trial. Now, another Black child harmed by prejudice will never see justice.
