On Thursday, Boston University students protested for the establishment of a "sanctuary campus" to protect all students from federal immigration enforcement. Their demonstration coincided with the presence of a Department of Homeland Security officer on campus. The protest, organized by the BU Young Democratic Socialists, highlighted concerns that the Boston University Police Department could collaborate with ICE, contradicting the sanctuary city law applicable to Boston. Around 60 students participated, echoing similar demands from students at other universities across the U.S., aiming to ensure a supportive environment for all students, including non-citizen individuals.
They want to be able to feel safe on their campus, and they want to feel like the administration has their back and is working in the interests of all students, including non-citizen students.
Right now, there is nothing stopping BUPD from cooperating with ICE as Boston's sanctuary city law does not apply to our campus police. We want that to change.
Calls for sanctuary campus policies are not unique to BU. Students at other universities across the country, including the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the University of Texas at Austin, have made similar demands.
The protest highlighted student concerns about immigration policy enforcement on campus, stressing the need for a supportive environment for all students, regardless of immigration status.
