On May 17, 2025, a Mexican naval ship, Cuauhtemoc, crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in the deaths of two crew members and injuring 19 others. The vessel lost power while maneuvering, leading to the crash, which occurred during a goodwill tour. Investigators, including the NYPD and the National Transportation Safety Board, are examining the incident, while city officials assess structural damage to the bridge. The Cuauhtemoc was on its way to participate in the upcoming celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
"The pilot that was maneuvering the ship lost power... caused the ship to go right into the pillar of the bridge hitting the mast of the ship where there were a couple of sailors on top," said NYPD Chief Wilson Aramboles.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed both deceased were crew members of the Cuauhtemoc training ship that crashed into the bridge during its goodwill tour.
