To qualify for the position of school crossing guard, applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment. While there are no formal education or experience requirements, candidates must be able to understand and speak English clearly. A child was struck by a car while crossing Dean Street on the way to PS 38 in Boerum Hill. The residential street has a speed bump, but parents say measures are insufficient to protect students. Council Member Lincoln Restler requested the NYPD Transportation Division assign a temporary crossing guard to PS 38 and is pushing for a permanent guard. Restler is coordinating with the Department of Transportation to improve drop-off and pick-up safety. Applicants for a permanent crossing guard must be at least 18, meet physical and medical requirements, pass background, medical and drug screenings, complete six days of NYPD training, and serve a six-month probation; the role pays $19.14 per hour.
