A devastating fire erupted in a Sunset Park building early Monday morning, leading to the tragic death of 53-year-old Ashiq Hussain during a chaotic evacuation. Firefighters acted swiftly, utilizing multiple ladders to rescue trapped residents. However, during his escape, Hussain fell after the ladder retracted beneath him, resulting in fatal injuries. Over 60 firefighters contained the fire within an hour, ensuring no other casualties were found. Meanwhile, the investigation by FDNY continues, focusing on the fire's origin and reviewing the malfunctioning ladder used in the rescue.
Video footage reviewed by the outlet shows Hussain climbing out of a third-floor window as smoke billowed behind him, with a firefighter waiting at the top of a retractable ladder.
The firefighter on the ladder managed to hold on and stay atop as the ladder retracted, according to the Post.
FDNY Fire Marshals are investigating the cause and origin of the fire, and the department is also reviewing the ladder involved in the rescue.
Two other civilians were taken to Maimonides in stable condition, where they were treated for smoke inhalation.
