On March 28, 2025, a significant two-alarm fire broke out in a private home at 538 East 84th St. in Brooklyn, injuring three firefighters when a stairwell collapsed. The fire started around 8:03 p.m., and it took a collective effort of over 200 firefighters from 25 units approximately 90 minutes to subdue the blaze. The specialized Firefighter Assist Search Team was able to rescue the trapped firefighters, who were subsequently hospitalized but listed in stable condition by the morning. The fire was declared under control by 9:33 p.m.
After the trapped firefighters signaled for help, a specialized team was deployed to safely rescue them amid challenging conditions, demonstrating the risks firefighters face during operations.
More than 200 firefighters from 25 FDNY units responded to the fire, effectively coordinating their efforts to control and extinguish the blaze within a crucial 90 minutes.
