Dense, near-zero visibility fog on Highway 99 led to a 17-vehicle crash early Sunday near Fresno. Melissa Culver and her husband were traveling to church when their blue Hyundai was struck and heavily damaged; they suffered bruises, rib soreness and whiplash while escaping with minor injuries. One couple who exited their vehicle was struck; Gustavo Villanueva Vargas, 61, died at the scene and his wife was hospitalized. California Highway Patrol reported visibility of about 10 to 15 feet and described victims being thrown 30 to 40 feet. The experience left survivors grateful and reassessing priorities.
