Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta are filing a lawsuit against President Donald Trump, alleging that his recent tariff policies have caused significant economic harm to California. They argue that the tariffs, enacted under the guise of a national emergency, are a misuse of presidential power. The tariffs, which have raised costs of various goods, threaten local businesses and jobs. Newsom has also reached out to international leaders, attempting to protect California from potential retaliatory measures, stressing the state's economic importance as the fifth-largest in the world.
"President Trump's unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy - driving up prices and threatening jobs," the governor said in a statement.
"Trump is abusing this power by imposing tariffs in the absence of a national emergency," said Attorney General Rob Bonta, highlighting the legal basis for their lawsuit.
