""There is something especially appalling about stealing from the dead. During a time when dignity and respect should be absolute, Mr. Muñoz chose greed.""
""Today's plea is a step toward justice, but it cannot undo the additional trauma inflicted on families who were already dealing with loss.""
Adrian Munoz, a 36-year-old investigator, was charged with stealing a gold crucifix from a deceased man in South L.A. in January 2023. He hid the crucifix in his medical bag while responding to the death. An investigation revealed rare antique coins belonging to another deceased individual in his desk. Munoz pleaded no contest to theft charges and will serve 180 days in jail, two years of probation, and must pay restitution. He also forfeits his right to work as a peace officer or death investigator in California.
