Canada's new PM says he'll talk trade with Trump if there is 'respect'
Briefly

Mark Carney, Canada’s incoming Prime Minister, expressed his willingness to engage in trade talks with US President Donald Trump, insisting on respect for Canadian sovereignty. This statement coincides with Canada’s announcement of retaliatory tariffs worth 29.8 billion Canadian dollars on US imports, following the Trump administration's imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Carney highlighted the importance of renewing the economic partnership between Canada and the US and noted the unjustified nature of the current tariffs affecting Canadian industries.
I am ready to sit down with President Trump at the appropriate time under a position where there is respect for Canadian sovereignty and we are working for a common approach, a much more comprehensive approach for trade.
Today is a difficult day for Canada and the industry because of these unjustified tariffs that have been put on.
We don't want to do this because we believe in open borders and free and fair trade, but we are doing this in response.
