Due to ongoing trade tensions and a weak Canadian dollar, many Canadians are shunning trips to the U.S., with reports indicating a 40% drop in leisure bookings for American cities. Travellers like Amy and Matthew Gleiser canceled their March Break trip to Myrtle Beach in favor of vacationing in Mexico, citing ethical concerns about spending money in the U.S. amid tariff threats. The situation highlights growing frustration among Canadians regarding the perceived economic hostility from the U.S., affecting communities reliant on cross-border tourism.
Amy Gleiser expressed her family's disappointment in changing travel plans but emphasized the importance of their decision: "With all of the tariff threats and this constant 'Canada is a 51st state' which we hate, we just decided that we really didn't feel in good conscience that we could go down to the United States and spend money and support an economy in a country that really is out to hurt us as Canadians right now."
Travel agency Flight Centre noted a significant decrease in travel plans to the U.S., stating that leisure bookings to American cities dropped 40 per cent in February from the same month in 2024, with one in five customers canceling their trips to the U.S. over the past three months.
