Helen Keough, a 44-year-old project manager, struggled with a painful ulcer under her tongue for months, initially dismissing it as stress-related. After multiple consultations and a delayed diagnosis, she was found to have stage two tongue cancer. Following surgery to remove a significant portion of her tongue and a challenging recovery, Helen now faces potential radiation treatment due to the chance of cancer recurrence. She emphasizes the importance of being proactive in health matters, believing she would have faced dire consequences had she not sought answers promptly.
I thought I was just so busy and run down. Because I'm so busy, it wasn't until September that I went to my GP and they told me to go to my dentist.
It got to the point where it was waking me up at night and it hurt to eat. It was just so sore. I was losing weight at the time and was very tired.
Helen believes she would've 'been dead within a year' if she hadn't pushed health professionals for answers in the months leading to her diagnosis.
After being told to come into hospital, Helen was diagnosed with stage two tongue cancer - and told the bothersome sore in her mouth was in fact a tumour.
