Tesla's Cybertruck has faced increasing scrutiny, partly due to anti-Elon Musk sentiment. Reports have emerged of body panels detaching while driving at high speeds. A Michigan driver described losing a metal panel during highway travel, with similar incidents reported elsewhere. The Cybertruck utilizes adhesive to hold its expansive body panels instead of traditional screws or welding, resulting in failures that lead to panels flying off. Despite complaints submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla's response has been limited, raising safety concerns about the vehicle's design.
While merging and accelerating on the interstate in normal traffic, at about 70 mph, I heard a loud ripping sound and the metal panel liberated and flew into traffic behind me.
Since the Cybertruck launched in November 2023, at least two other boomerang-panel complaints have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
