MDB created a unique 'bunkhouse' in Beaver Brook, NY, that masterfully combines rustic charm with modern sensibilities. Set on a steep slope, the building utilizes a 19th-century timber-frame barn structure, now embedded in a durable, energy-efficient design. Key features include large windows for scenic views and interiors utilizing reclaimed materials such as yellow pine beams and antique barn flooring. The inclusion of structural insulated panels enhances insulation, while heating through a condensing boiler and a heat recovery ventilator ensure comfort throughout the year. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can merge tradition with sustainability.
The MDB-designed retreat blurs the line between rustic charm and modern sensibility, showcasing how minimalism can harmonize with nature through reclaimed building materials.
Situated at a challenging site, the bunkhouse reflects the client’s appreciation for robust materials, combining 19th century timber and energy-efficient technologies in its design.
