Sydney-based artist Michelle Robinson blends the intricate art of passementerie with spinning fibers to create vibrant geometric wall hangings. Over two years, her artistic journey has shifted from ambitious scaling to focusing on small-scale iterations, which allow her to experiment with fibers, yarn denier, and color palettes. Robinson enjoys a meditative state while spinning, contrasting the meticulous pre-planning of her weaving. She also incorporates elements from her extensive collection of woven textiles, enhancing her creative process and output.
Continuing her practice rooted in the extensive art of passementerie, Michelle Robinson weaves vibrant threads into geometric wall hangings that curve, puff, and meander.
I didn't expect the pure meditative state spinning allows, which is in stark contrast to the complex pre-planning that is involved for my weaving practice, especially passementerie.
Robinson has been also been working on incorporating her vast personal collection of woven textile cloths, embellishments, and wallpaper.
