"(NEXSTAR) - If you had to guess which social media site is used most by Americans, would you guess platforms like Facebook, Instagram or TikTok? Even though these wouldn't be terrible guesses, new polling from Pew Research Center shows it's an app many of us might not even think of as a social media site. Though it's a little bit different than platforms where all users have profiles and post their own content, the most-visited social media site in the U.S. is actually YouTube."
"The survey of just over 5,000 U.S. adults found that 84 percent said they had used YouTube, the highest amount of any platform. For context, the next-highest percentage, (71 percent) goes to Facebook. These two platforms dominate social media usage, per the survey, with about half of U.S. adults saying they visit YouTube and/or Facebook daily. Here's the popularity of each major social media site, as determined by the data."
"Meta's Threads, a real-time microblogging social site akin to the original Twitter, had 8% of U.S. adults say they had ever used the site. This shows the highest amount among the three smaller platforms. The other two are Twitter-founder Jack Dorsey's Bluesky, also a real-time microblogging site akin to the original Twitter, (4 percent of U.S. adults), and President Donald Trump's Truth Social (3 percent U.S. adults)."
A survey of just over 5,000 U.S. adults found 84 percent had used YouTube, the highest of any platform, while 71 percent had used Facebook. About half of U.S. adults visit YouTube and/or Facebook daily. Smaller platforms recorded lower adoption: Threads (8 percent), Bluesky (4 percent), and Truth Social (3 percent). YouTube and Facebook are the only platforms with majority use across all age groups. Facebook's user base skews older, with highest percentages among 30–49-year-olds and those 65 and over. Adults under 30 are more likely to use Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Reddit, and YouTube.
