N.Y.U. Dorm Is Retrofitted to Be Sustainable
Briefly

New York University has invested $7 million in an environmentally sustainable renovation of Rubin Hall, initially a hotel and converted into student housing in 1964. This ambitious project, completed over 15 months, focused on enhancing energy efficiency to limit costs and maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the building. The renovation, which aligns with the university's commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2040, included replacing outdated boiler systems with efficient hot water systems and custom windows to uphold the building’s historic status, all while providing modern amenities for students and staff alike.
We commit, in every new project of this scale, to look at a fully electric solution, to look at something that moves toward our climate neutral goal by 2040, said Cecil Scheib, N.Y.U.'s chief sustainability officer.
Custom-made windows were designed to maintain the building's landmark status.
