As much as the current forms of attention capitalism exist to take our attention, there is some very deep part of us that wants it taken. This paradox suggests while we criticize the constant noise surrounding us, we also crave that stimulation, even if it leads us to feel overwhelmed and distracted. Perhaps it is a reflection of our own habits and the choices we make to engage with a world that perpetuates distraction.
I've come to view boredom, specifically its avoidance, as the silent engine of modern life. We live in a constant state of trying to fend off that boredom, which often manifests through our compulsive interactions with technology and media. The sophisticated ways in which corporations extract our attention play a significant role in this cycle, making it increasingly difficult to find moments of peace or genuine thoughtfulness.
