Surge in Irish children turning to AI chatbots for friendship and help with homework
Briefly

Age verification on apps is ineffective. There has been a large increase in children's use of chatbots for homework, friendship and information, often without safeguards. A national survey by CyberSafeKids found marked year-on-year growth in chatbot use among children. Use among eight- to 12-year-olds rose to 26 percent this year from 5 percent last year. Use among 12- to 15-year-olds rose to 36 percent from 12 percent. Many children access chatbot technology despite minimal protective measures, creating potential risks related to exposure to inappropriate content, privacy, and misinformation.
