Mark and Brian Canlis took over their family restaurant, Canlis, in 2005 and transformed it from a staid dining establishment into a vibrant venue that embraces creativity. A pivotal moment occurred during a party they threw featuring a nacho cheese fountain and wacky costumes, reflecting their desire to create the restaurant experience they wished to enjoy rather than conforming to expectations. After decades of running the restaurant together, Brian is now moving to Nashville for a new project, leaving Mark at the helm of their family legacy.
It was a big party for everyone. Every guest wore crazy wigs... That was a night where something clicked for Mark and I, when we decided to throw the party that we wanted to attend and not just the one we were supposed to.
Soon, after nearly 20 years in which they ran Canlis together, the restaurant will no longer be theirs. It will just be Mark's.
