Three-quarters of UK champion continued broadband infrastructure investment | Computer Weekly
Briefly

The Internet Services Providers' Association published a study marking its 30th anniversary, highlighting that broadband infrastructure is crucial for the British public. A majority believes everyone in the UK should have access to high-speed internet. The research surveyed 2,000 UK consumers and showed that broadband remains a daily priority, even above essential utilities. While gigabit-capable broadband roll-out has excelled, challenges persist in ensuring universal access. There is a division in public opinion on whether the government or ISPs should be responsible for providing affordable broadband for all.
The study revealed that access to reliable, high-speed internet has become a daily necessity, and people are willing to prioritise broadband over other household needs.
In fact, only supermarkets were ranked higher than broadband as a daily priority (40% vs 37%), with internet access seen as more essential than utilities, mobile networks or even banks.
While gigabit-capable broadband roll-out in the UK has been one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects of recent decades, ensuring that everyone benefits from these advances remains a work in progress.
The study shows that rolling out broadband infrastructure remains mission-critical for the British public, with over three-quarters believing that high-speed internet access should be universal.
