Apple has decided to withdraw its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) tool in the UK, a service intended for end-to-end encryption of user files uploaded to iCloud. This decision comes after the government requested access to encrypted files under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016. Apple stated that it does not support backdoors in its systems, emphasizing the need for strong data protection amid rising privacy concerns. Although some data types will remain encrypted, new users will be unable to benefit from ADP, and current users will have to deactivate it eventually.
Apple can no longer offer Advanced Data Protection (ADP) in the United Kingdom to new users and current UK users will eventually need to disable this security feature.
We are gravely disappointed that the protections provided by ADP will not be available to our customers in the UK given the continuing rise of data breaches and other threats to customer privacy.
