A federal district judge ruled against UCSA's motion to block the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing student data. The UCSA argued that this access violated the 1974 Privacy Act by sharing confidential records. However, Judge Randolph D. Moss stated the DOGE staff were assisting with auditing and understood data privacy laws. While concerns exist about potential misuse of sensitive information, Moss deemed these fears as speculative. The lawsuit will continue, and additional legal challenges regarding DOGE's access are being raised by other advocacy groups.
None of those initiatives should involve disclosure of any sensitive, personal information about any UCSA members.
The future injuries that UCSA's members fear are, therefore, far from likely, let alone certain and great.
The data was not being used in such ways.
Other higher education groups have raised concerns about DOGE's access to education data.
