As Oakland gears up to host various events for the NBA All-Star weekend, community efforts are underway to beautify the Hegenberger Corridor. With events like the celebrity game and the HBCU classic at Oakland Arena, local organizations, businesses, and government officials have collaborated to clean up the area. This includes fixing burned-out streetlights and organizing clean-up events. As the city’s basketball legacy faces challenges with the departure of teams like the Raiders, A's, and Warriors, community leaders are hopeful these events will rejuvenate interest and safety in the region.
"It's one of those things where you've got company coming over and you want to make sure everything looks perfectly clean," said Ray Bobbitt with the African American Sports and Entertainment Group.
"We lost the Raiders, we lost the A's, we lost the Warriors, but now we have this, Oakland is hosting the NBA All Star celebrity game with the HBCU classic..." said Oakland City Councilmember Ken Houston.
