The 17-year-old transgender student, Cobalt Sovereign, was attacked in a school bathroom despite using the boys' restroom in alignment with her biological sex and state protection rights.
After being verbally attacked with an antigay slur, Cobalt was physically assaulted by a male student, resulting in a broken jaw, cracked teeth, and a concussion.
School staff failed to respond appropriately by not calling an ambulance or police after the assault, leaving Cobalt's family to seek emergency medical attention independently.
Despite the severe injuries and surgery, the school did not respond until Cobalt's mother reached out directly to the superintendent, who was unaware of the incident.
