Six ways to build trust between college presidents and students
Briefly

A recent survey revealed that 28% of college students have 'not much trust' in their college executives, significantly higher compared to professors and department leaders. Private nonprofit institutions show the highest levels of distrust at 48%. A total of 52% of students show some degree of distrust toward their campus leaders. Experts emphasize that trust is crucial for leaders, suggesting that showing care and engaging with students can build a more trusting and collaborative campus environment.
Trust is in very short supply on campuses. We do not see deeply trusting environments on campus very quickly," said Emma Jones, executive vice president and owner of higher education consulting group Credo.
Presidents are in agreement that trust building is a key competency for being a campus leader. They need to be present with their constituents and create opportunities for various stakeholders to share their views.
Humanity is a key factor in trust, where a person recognizes the uniqueness of each individual and builds relationships with them, according to Jones.
Students at private nonprofit institutions were most likely to say they did not have much trust in their president (48 percent) compared to their public four-year peers.
